Geostat 2011 Summer School in Landau

GEOSTAT is where statistical computing meets geographical analysis

GEOSTAT is a non-profit specialized block course (summer school) run by FOSS enthusiasts and developers. The main idea of GEOSTAT is to promote various aspects of statistical analysis of spatial and spatio-temporal data using open source / free GIS tools: R, SAGA GIS, GRASS GIS, FWTools, Google Earth and similar. In the summer of 2011 (24.-27.7.2011) the GEOSTAT Summer School took place at the University Koblenz-Landau on the campus in Landau. The summer school was broadcasted via live stream and recorded so that everybody who missed out can still watch the videos online or download them.

ESRI NON-Profit Grants

A sort of easy way to grab cheap copies of licenses for ESRI software. See details below.

    Subject: New ESRI nonprofit grants
    Hi folks
Readers of Arcnews will already know, but Jack and I wanted to announce a new global grants program for non-profit groups. Called the “ESRI nonprofit program”, and located at http://www.esri.com/nonprofit/, it’s a streamlined way to get a cheap 1-year license of
Arc/INFO, Esri’s flagship GIS software. All of our existing grant programs like ECP and Techsoup continue in full force and for the most part, grants from any program don’t exclude you from eligibility for other programs. Techsoup in particular continues to grow
and add new tech content of interest to any nonprofit. Each program is important to us and different in important ways, so pick the one that best matches your needs. A new site at www.esri.com/grants<http://www.esri.com/grants> summarizes all of our grant programs in relation to one another.

    regards,
    Charles Convis

The International Environmental Modelling and Software Society (IEMSS)   is distributing the book Computational methods for water resource assessments – an exercise kit. This book is a primer for learning the basics of spatial hydrology assessments and includes its own software tools and sample data.

Download the book PDF and the software tool from the IEMSS website (look for the Books link bottom left) or directly from this address http://bit.ly/9zFrnQ. There is plenty of useful information around including the recent IEMSS 2010 Congress.

2010 Summer School “Space Monitoring of the Earth Environment” (Brazil)

Since 2009, the Brazilian Universities: Fundação Universidade de Brasília – Universidade do Estado do Amazonas and the French Universities: Université de Toulouse – Institut de Recherche pour le Développement, offer a summer school “Space Monitoring of the Earth Environment” experience. About thirty participants from Latin America and French Guyana have the opportunity to learn and discuss the techniques and spatial information suitable for environmental monitoring.

Lasting two weeks, the summer school program will be organised as follows: one week of classroom instruction and one week of thematic teaching with a different theme every year. The 2010 edition will take place in Manus ( Brazil ) on 5-16 July. This year’s theme will be: “Water, Environment, Resources”.

Taking place in the core of the world’s biggest watershed, this year summer school will focus on using space technologies for water studies, especially in large river basins. Special emphasis will be given to:

  • the use of radar altimetry to measure water levels,
  • on the techniques for analyzing the color of the water for monitoring concentrations in sediment along rivers,
  • on soil moisture remote sensing in flood monitoring.

Registration for 2010 summer school are opened.  For more information

Re: European Trends in Nighttime Lights

Source: Earth System Trends Blog from Clark University

Earth Trends Modeler is one analytical tool introduced with Idrisi Taiga, the GIS flagship of Clark.edu. In its blog there are several examples of its application and useful pointers to global data sources. Its last post is a nice account about night lights trends along Europe. The major virtue, IMHO, is the inspirational boost for new analysis and more demanding questions. That’s the basis of science development.
